Planning Your Fall Engagement Session in NYC

Fall is one of my favorite times for engagement photos in New York. The weather is cooler, the city starts to change, and it is such a good time to walk around together without dealing with the summer heat. Whether you want fall colors in Central Park or more of a city feel in your favorite neighborhood, there are so many ways to plan a fall engagement session that feels like you.

Pick a Location You Love

There are plenty of popular places for engagement photos in NYC, but you do not have to choose somewhere just because you have seen photos there before. Think about what you want your photos to feel like and what parts of the city you love spending time in together.

Central Park is always beautiful in the fall if you want trees and seasonal color. The West Village is great for brownstones, streets, and more of that classic NYC feel. You can also choose your own neighborhood, a favorite bar, or somewhere that is meaningful to your relationship.

You also do not need a long list of locations. One or two areas gives us plenty of time to walk around and find different spots without feeling rushed.

Choose the Right Time of Fall

If you are hoping for colorful leaves, later October into early November is usually a good time to plan your session. Every year is a little different, so there is never an exact date when the city will suddenly look like fall.

September and early October are still great options if you care more about the cooler weather than the leaves. No matter when you schedule, we can choose locations that work well for that point in the season.

It is also important to remember that the sun starts setting much earlier as we get further into fall. Your session may need to start earlier in the afternoon so we have enough daylight.

Keep Your Outfits Simple

Fall gives you a lot of options when it comes to outfits. A great jacket, sweater, dress, or coat can add a little more to your photos without feeling like you are dressing specifically for a fall photoshoot.

I always recommend choosing something you already feel good in. You do not need to match each other or stick to certain colors. Your outfits should work well together while still feeling like something you would actually wear.

If you want two different looks, you can always bring an outfit change. Just keep in mind that we will probably be doing a good amount of walking, so comfortable shoes for getting between locations are always a good idea.

Do Not Overplan It

You do not need to fit every NYC engagement photo idea you have saved into one session. Trying to visit too many locations usually means spending more time getting around the city and less time actually taking photos.

Instead, choose a general area and give us time to explore it. We can walk around, stop when we find a good spot, and let New York be part of the photos. Some of my favorite locations are ones we find along the way.

Make a Date Out of It

Since you are already getting dressed up and spending some time together, plan something for afterward. Make a dinner reservation, grab a drink, or go somewhere you both love.

Your engagement session does not need to feel like another thing you have to check off your wedding planning list. It can just be an afternoon together in the city with some really good photos at the end of it.

Fall Engagement Photos in NYC

The best part about planning engagement photos in New York is that your session can look completely different from someone else's. You can spend the afternoon in Central Park, walk around the West Village, stay close to your own neighborhood, or do a little bit of both.

Once you have an idea of what you want, we can figure out the locations and timing together. Keep it simple, choose places you actually like, and enjoy getting to spend a fall afternoon together in New York.
